5 Tips For Finding and Decorating with Local Vintage and Antiques

I love for my home to reflect some of the history of the area I live in. If you are interested in adding local flavor to your home read on for my tips for where to shop and what to look for!

This also helps when decorating vacation homes such as cabins and beach houses!!

Where are you going to find vintage and antiques that reflect local flavor??? In person you can hit up the local thrifts and antiques stores. Chances are people are donating and selling things that they have bought from your area!

1.) I find lots of paintings by local hobby artists at the thrift and even thrifted studio work from potters and even fabric artists. You can also find photos and postcards of local buildings like this one pictured below!

2.) What’s the industry in your area? This will give you keys for what to look for. For me it’s snack foods! So that means we find so many tins from chips, pretzels and chocolates! Lucky for me I love this in my decor.

3.) If you are in a resort town look for that resort decor. Souvenir pennants and postcards make amazing gallery wall decor!

Find a stash of matchbooks? Stick them in an apothecary jar!

4.) You can also look for old advertising bits and bobs. In the 1940’s and 1950’s so many small shops produced prints of landscapes and portraits with their logos and info. I’ve found advertising calendars with beautiful images, advertising thermometers, framed puzzles…

5.) Maps! This one might be my favorite! I’ve found original maps framed and reprints at antiques and thrift stores. I think they add the best local personal touch.

If you don’t have luck in person, Etsy and eBay are great resources for niche vintage! You can easily find items from your area by searching your County or nearby towns.

Happy hunting and decorating!
