Oh, anchovy paste. A delicious Victorian treat! Anchovy’s would be smoked and dried and ground up into a fine paste. This would be top with clarified butter to prevent spoiling in these little ironstone pots. The paste would then be smeared on breads.
While, I’m not a fan of the actual paste, I love collecting the antique pots they came in! The advertising is amazing.
This is a true piece of English history and not a reproduction. This item has been dug up from an English Trash Heap (sometimes referred to as a midden) where treasure hunters search for Victorian waste. This piece is in fair condition considering it’s been in the ground for over 100 years.
