Victorian cheese keepers will always be one of my favorite pieces of China. They speak to the need for practical beauty!

Victorian cheese domes, cheese keepers and sometimes called cheese keepers allowed you to keep cuts of cheese covered from pests and the air. The small hole allowed for just enough air circulation and to ensure the cheese didn’t moist up. Users could cut off the hardened skin of the rind and reveal fresh cheese underneath.

Today it’s a statement piece! You can also repurpose it in different ways. I love to use them as a sponge and soap holder next to my sink. I love the delicate hand painted florals and the touch of gold along the edges.

This specific piece was manufactured by S. Fielding and Co. from Stoke-on-Trent, England. It was made before 1913.

Underplate measures 7.5” long x 6.25” wide and the cover is 4.5” tall including the handle
